Best HIST 302W Paper

The purpose of this award is to recognize the awardees for their excellent work in writing a research paper for their HIST 302W; this is a research seminar that every history major must take, and in which many non-history majors also enroll.

Jocelyn Krieger

Josie is a rising junior, who has chosen to pursue a double major in History and Economics, as well as minors in Jewish Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and French. Josie’s research paper for her HIST 302W is titled “The Genesis of Mesoamerican Stereotypes: Why Cortés’ Sword Is Not Amazing”, which she wrote for Dr. Matthew Restall’s seminar. Already a co-director of Students Teaching Students (STS) at Penn State, she has also been selected to receive a 2020 National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarship for a six-month language study in Croatia, where she will be studying at the University of Zagreb from January 2021 to July 2021.

Arielle Lim

Ari is a rising senior, who is pursuing a double major in History and Labor and Employment Relations (LER). Ari's research paper for her HIST 302W is titled "Looking at the Prevalence of Various Modes of Conveyance in Medieval Art: The Correlation Between Modes of Conveyance and Reason for Travel", which she wrote for Dr. Kathryn Salzer's seminar. Next year, Ari will undertake her senior honors thesis with Dr. Salzer, focusing on medieval Mappae Mundi. She will also enroll in the LER IUG program that will also enable her to graduate with a Master's Degree.

Aileen McKinstry

Aileen is a senior, graduating with double majors in History and English, and a minor in Violin Performance. Aileen completed her Senior Honors Thesis in History under direction of Dr. Mike Milligan. Her Senior Honors Thesis is titled "Guns, Perps, and Scalia: An Analysis of Justice Antonin Scalia's Originalist Jurisprudence in District of Columbia v. Heller and Crawford v. Washington". After graduation Aileen intends to reread Harry Potter this summer, after which she will pursue an MPhil in American History at the University of Oxford.
