The completion and submission of this form is a necessary step for a student taking part in a for-academic-credit history internship. History 495 is the History Department’s three credit history internship course.
History 495 is not a conventional on-campus history course. Instead, it is based on experiential learning, on the student doing valued intern service and working off-campus with a history-related organization or institution. The usual course registration process does not apply.
Registration for History 495 is done by the History Department with the approval of the Department’s internship coordinator and the faculty member who will serve as the student’s academic supervisor for the internship.
Before submitting this History 495 Approval form, the student must do the following.
The student must have met with the on-site internship supervisor of the relevant internship organization or institution—and secured a formal commitment from the on-site supervisor that the internship is going forward. Second, the student has met with / corresponded with the Department’s internship coordinator [Dr. Milligan; mjm61@psu.edu] who has, in turn, confirmed the suitability of the internship for History 495 credit. The student must have secured the approval of a Department faculty member who has agreed to serve as academic supervisor for the internship [in most cases, the internship coordinator will take on this role].
Students should regard the History 495 internship course as being at least as demanding as a regular one and allocate the necessary resources of time and energy to it.
For History 495, the History Department requires a “service” time commitment of at least 135 hours for the term [adding together on-site and off-site work].
