Zachary Clark

I am a graduate student studying Late Qing and twentieth century Sino-Tibetan borderland history. My research seeks to challenge traditional periodization by examining the regions of Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan from the late Qing to the early 1950s. By expanding temporally beyond the traditional lens of the Republican Era I examine more continuous threads of strong regional governance, sometimes designated as warlordism, in these western regions. Positioning my geographic focus on western China, my research foregrounds the interests, cultures, and ethnic groups prevalent in western China in order to better understand the early developments of nationalism, ethnicity, and identity outside of central Chinese concerns.
