Biography:

Dr. Mares is a historian of Britain and its empire. She studies Britain’s empire in southern Africa over the course of the nineteenth century and Britain’s interactions with and depictions of the “other” in that contested space. She has taught courses on Modern Britain, Modern Europe, the Atlantic World, the French and Industrial Revolutions, Women and Gender in Modern Europe, the Tudors and the Stuarts, and the Victorian world. She also has interests and taught courses in gender studies and how identity is constructed, as well. She has published on Britain and its empire as well as on HBO’s Game of Thrones.
