Curriculum Vitae:

Biography:

Shelley’s graduate research interests broadly revolve around the history of education, propaganda, and memory in modern China. Before coming to Penn State, Shelley worked as a research assistant for the Wilson Center’s History and Public Policy Program and conducted Fulbright research in Taipei. She has a master’s degree from the University of Kentucky and particularly enjoys exploring and writing about lianhuahua, a genre of illustrated story books, from the Mao era (1949-1976). Her research thus combines archival work with a lot of digital “sinological garbology.” Even when it is hard for her to visit certain university libraries or archives, she still finds interesting old Chinese children’s books in random places all over the internet.
